While I am not a big label fanatic (although I have had a Betsey Johnson obsession since my teens), sometimes I like to add a few higher end pieces to my wardrobe. Today, it was my Burberry winter hat and scarf, which I have had forever btw. Last week, however, I found the cutest pink …
(may contain affiliate links) While the temptation is always there to purge my wardrobe and start fresh every season when I see all sorts of cute outfits, I look at my bank account and my current goals and put the debit card away. That doesn’t mean that I give up though!!! I usually get a …
(contains affiliate links.) My favorite word is “SALE.” I tend to buy a lot of my wardrobe from thrift stores and the sale racks at my favorite clothing stores. This summer, I fell in love with all the long flowy dresses from Torrid, but with starting a new business (a topic for another day), I …
You may remember me posting this top in a post earlier this summer when I talked about daring to wear pieces that plus size women are told not to wear. This is one of my favorite tops, and I wear it quite often, either on its own or with a tank top. This top ended …
Five years ago, I made a very conscious decision to purge my wardrobe and start fresh. Granted, I wore trendy clothes, but to be honest, they just did not fit who I am. It was like I settled for mom gear and forgot my own sense of style. Needless to say, I had no idea where to start.
While I started wearing more pin up and rockabilly style apparel, I also liked showing off my geek side. While Hot Topic does not carry a lot of plus size in their stores (and I want to say for the record that I think they should), they carry a pretty extensive line on their website. I get some of my cosplay starter dresses there when they have clearance sales because sometimes it makes it cheaper to go that route than to make it myself, but you can read more about that on another post. They carry a lot of tee shirts for various fandoms, as well as dresses and accessories. The R2D2 purse featured here was purchased there.
I also find a lot of fun pieces at Torrid. As you probably know, if you follow me on Instagram, I wear a lot of clothes from Torrid. In store, they carry a lot of tee shirts, sweaters, pants, and all that jazz. They also have been known to carry underwear and bralettes too in certain fandoms, like Star Wars. Plus, you can get some super cute purses as well. I have even gotten Disney themed flats there. However, if you go online, they have wayyyyy more! That is how I got the Star Wars romper. I love this romper by the way. It is super cute, and it fits pretty true to size. The nice thing about Torrid is that they carry clothing from size 10 to 30.
Probably one of the most extensive places to find fan girl clothes though is at Her Universe. Her Universe is an online store that caters to fandoms. The only drawback is that it only goes to a 3x, and it is a bit small. They carry everything from sleepwear to pin up style dresses in your favorite fandoms. Super cute stuff!
These are my favorite places to shop for my geekier clothes. I love showing off my love of Star Wars, Doctor Who, comic books, and Disney characters. The fact that I look super cute while doing it is a plus.
For this particular look featured in this post, I wore a Star Wars romper from Torrid with a R2-D2 purse from Hot Topic. My hat and sandals are thrifted from Clothes Mentor. I wore this for a day out with the mister, but where would you wear an outfit like this?

One of my favorite things about summer is all the fresh produce! I love to pick it. I love to eat it, and I love to support local farms! That is why I was super excited to visit the Youngstown Farmer’s Market!
The Youngstown Farmer’s Market is on the second Wednesday of the summer months and showcases some wonderful produce by local farmers. One of my besties and I loaded up our bags and hit the place late morning. Unfortunately, by the time we got there, a lot of the farmers were sold out! On the upside, I got some wonderful greens and some delicious strawberries. This month, we decided we would hit it early!
While the weather has been a bit warmer than I like, I did find this cute jumpsuit by Rainbow on sale and just had to wear it for the occasion! I absolutely love jumpsuits, and I am super excited how many stores feature plus size options for them. Just to mention a few: Torrid, Rainbow, and Rue 21 all carry some super cute options!
While I am known to usually add a belt to accent the waist of a lot of my jumpsuits and rompers, I left this one as is because I thought the sash was just perfect. I paired it with a pair of gold sandals and a necklace. It was super comfortable and actually airy for the warm weather.
Light jumpsuits are a great option for the hot weather, and no matter what size you are, you ABSOLUTELY CAN wear them. You can pair them with belts, vests, or jackets, or you can leave them as is like I did with this one here. A cute necklace and a pair of shoes, and you are ready for a night out or a day walking along the beach!
What is one of your favorite new trends right now? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below! Don’t forget to share if you liked this post!
Torrid has become somewhat of an addiction over the last eleven years. I remember my first Torrid visit like it was yesterday…I was on vacation in Cleveland (because Cleveland rocks, which is why I am now living close to the CLE now). I walked in and found my home! It was a trendy plus size gal’s dream come true! Granted, I went back to my home near Philly and lamented for several years that the closest one to me there was two hours away, until we finally got one at King of Prussia Mall. Now I am lucky to have two Torrids within 15 minutes of driving distance! It’s a dream come true!
However, I know a lot of my friends get sticker shock when they see some of the pretty dresses and outfits there, so I am going to give you some of my best tips for getting what you want without breaking the bank!
Check their Clearance
One of the things I like about Torrid is their consistent fit. I have a generally good idea what size I will be in their clothes, which means that I can shop online and generally not have to return things. I check their sales a lot, both online and in-store. Sometimes the individual stores themselves have different sales than what is online. This holds true especially for their buy one get two free clearance. Seriously, that is one of their best deals, and I get so many great pieces that way!
Become an Insider
If you want to stay in the know, make sure that you are on their email list and an Insider. Insiders earn points that turn into rewards bucks for your purchases. Their rewards are the only thing that really stack too with Haute Cash and coupons. I pay attention to my emails for when they have flash sales. Their flash sales are the bomb! I usually have a running wishlist of things I want, and then I use these as opportunities to get what I want and also build Haute Cash. Haute Cash can be redeemed a few times a year. You earn $25 for every $50 spent. Then during redemption, you use them on your purchase. The only drawback is that you cannot use Haute Cash on clearance! However, you can score some amazing deals on regular priced merchandise, which is how I got this outfit!
This time around for Torrid Haute Cash, I did not have a lot built up. However, I had a small wish list anyways, so I was not too terribly disappointed. I used the Haute Cash that I had and got this entire outfit! I wanted something that has a bit of the retro feel that I love to wear but was also comfortable for the beginning of summer. I got this cute polka dot challis cami because I love the flowy babydoll look and the retro feel of the polka dots. Then I paired it with their cropped leggings in red. To accessorize, I topped it off with the fisherman’s hat. Then I added their black and white striped Mary Janes to finish the look. Each piece goes together for the whole look, but I can also pair them with other things in my closet for fun as well!
So what do you think? Is it cute, or would you have paired it differently? I hope you found this helpful for the next time you shop at Torrid, and if it was, make sure to share!
It is that time of year where the weather is warm, but still unpredictable. I haven’t put my sweaters away just yet, but I am digging out all my pretty sundresses and favorite skirts and tops for summer. Last year, I discovered my love for bodysuits and crop tops. Of course, many people say that plus size people should wear neither. I say, “Screw them. I’m gonna wear what I want.”
Crop tops have been making a comeback for a while, and many of my favorite places to shop featured them over the fall and winter. They are more versatile than you might first think. You can wear them on their own with a cute pair of jeans. You can put a tunic tank underneath and wear with your favorite leggings or skinny jeans. You can also pair them with cute skirts as well. I love the idea of wearing them with a tutu style skirt personally and cannot wait to try that look later in the summer.
I mentioned bodysuits earlier. I have a small collection of Lindy Bop ones in my closet itching to be worn. I love pairing them with circle skirts for a cute pin up look. I remember when I got my first circle skirt a few years ago and was so frustrated that all the shirts I tried to pair them with looked kinda frumpy. I remember thinking how much nicer it would look if I could just wear a bodysuit instead. It seems the fashion gods must have heard me because I finally started finding some cute ones last summer. They look great with a circle skirt, but they can be cute with a great pair of jeans too!
While I am excited to bring out my crop tops, dresses, skirts, and bodysuits, I am also excited to pair them all with cute hats! I love hats. I seem to pick them up wherever I go. The last time I went to Philly, I picked up a Pikachu hat. When I went to Atlantic City, I found a cute Western hat that I decided I needed to wear at the beach. I love big floppy hats, and I have a hard time resisting the urge to buy one. I have a whole photo shoot with me and a Victorian Style hat that I found while shopping in Jim Thorpe once. My favorite hats for summer though are big hats. I love wearing big hats and dresses and then walk around like I own the place. I think it is that part of me that is a little bit extra, but I feel like a queen in a big hat. Also, since I am pretty fair-skinned, I like to protect my head, shoulders, and face with them. I have been sunburned once this year already, and it is not even June.
While crop tops, bodysuits, and hats may not sound that daring, so many women shy away from them because of what society says. You wear a fancy hat, and people look at you like you are weird. You wear a bodysuit, and people say, “How Dare you be confident in your skin.” You wear a crop top, and people freak the heck out over exposed skin of a plus sized girl. I get it. It might make you want to shy away from these things. However, I spent so many years trying to fit in and dress the way “I was supposed to” and wear the stuff a fat girl should wear, and you know what? It was not fun. Fashion is fun! Fashion is expression! If you want to try a new trend, you should. I have found that wearing what I want…whether it is so-called “flattering” or not makes me feel good about myself. While I hate the saying YOLO, it is true. You only get one shot at this life. So wear what you want and be what you want. Try a new trend this summer. Rock a new look!
What is your favorite piece to wear for the summer, and how are you getting your summer wardrobe ready? I would love to hear about it in the comments below!
As it would happen, at the beginning of the summer, I found the world’s most perfect dress! I was at a pin up pageant, and one of the contestants had this amazing Lindy Bop Circus print dress. I just had to have it! There was only one problem: it was out of stock at Lindy Bop! What’s a girl to do? Well, here is how I found my unicorn, and it might help you when you find that perfect piece that is out of stock at your favorite store!
The first thing I did was to check with my favorite little boutiques. I love a lot of vintage inspired clothing, and I know a few boutiques that carry Lindy Bop, which is one of my favorite brands! First, I checked with Sudzy’s Pin Up Palace. She did not have it. So, of course, I checked with Retro Rosie‘s. I came up empty there too! Next I took to Facebook. Facebook has some awesome buy, sell, trade groups especially for plus size gals like myself. I tend to buy a lot of my clothes from them.
If you are a little hesitant to purchase, here are some things you can do to help make sure you don’t get burned.
- choose groups that are heavily administered. When the administrators stay on top of things, you are less likely to encounter a fraud.
- Start slow. Watch for sellers that seem to do a lot of business because if they are doing a lot of business, then you are less likely to have problems.
- Always make sure that you get an invoice. All the groups in which I belong require Pay Pal transactions. Some people try to do a money request instead of an invoice. Never participate in a money request. If something goes wrong, you can file a claim with Pay Pal as long as you have an invoice.
- Be sure you know the exact price. Is shipping included? Is shipping extra? Does the seller combine shipping? Always know before committing to purchase.
- Finally, make sure you know the measurements and condition of item. Take snapshots of the Facebook post in case you need it for later.
I have never really had issues with buy, sell, trade groups, but I have heard stories. I am always cautious, but seriously, I get a lot of my clothes through these groups because you can find some amazing deals. I wear a lot of Cherry Velvet. I know a seller that holds flash sales for their dresses every so often. They have all been like brand new! It is a fabulous way to get your unicorn…
…Which brings me to how you should search for your unicorn in these groups. If you are looking for something, you want to post ISO along with a picture and possibly a price range you are willing to pay. A lot of times, I have great success in doing just that. Unfortunately, with my Circus Dress I did not have any luck.
Just about the time I wanted to give up, I went back to Retro Rosie, and lo and behold…there was my dress!!! Even more lucky for me, the store was having a sale that weekend, so I scored the dress for a great price!
I was super excited, and I ended up wearing it for the first time for Thanksgiving dinner because I am a little extra like that. It is just as cute as the first time I saw it, and it is super comfy too. I felt super cute in it!
So if you happen to see something on Instagram or Pinterest…or even when you are out and about, but you don’t know how to get a hold of it in your size, try these tips. I very much suggest this especially when it comes to vintage inspired dresses because I see a lot of my favorite prints by my favorite designers being passed off on Amazon and Ebay as knockoffs. Also, when looking for something by your favorite brand, start keeping a list of small boutiques to try because they just might have what you are looking for, plus shopping small businesses is just awesome!

Today I finally got to wear my new dress I got from Sudzy’s Pin-Up Palace last month! Actually, I loved the whole style so much that I got the dress, the purse, and the parasol! What do you think?
All the pieces of this ensemble are Sourpuss. However, I found them through a pop-up shop at Sudzy’s last month. She has great stuff from Sourpuss, Lindy Bop, and other fun pin-up and rockabilly designers with great prices! I cannot wait to share more about her store later this month!
This dress was perfect for a day at the lake. The parasol came in handy since I am kinda on the pale side. I burn easily. I don’t care how many people gave me weird looks, I am so just gonna rock parasols for the rest of the summer. I don’t even know how I lived without them before now. The dress is super comfy and well-made, and the handbag…Well, the handbag is not only made well (which is good because I am hard on my bags), but it is like the TARDIS of bags. I can fit a ton of stuff in it. I usually keep a sweater, snacks, my wallet, my phone, sunglasses, and other things as well. Plus, the design is just cool!
Sourpuss makes a lot of cool dresses and accessories. However, you can find their clothing at small retailers like Sudzy’s, which is nice because she is a peach, but also smaller retailers really help you find dresses that fit your style!
