Things to Do, Places to See

Clever, Yet Inexpensive Gift Exchange Idea

clever-yet-inexpensive-gift-exchange-idea

At our most recent Geek Girls Brunch, we had a “Date With a Book.” It was actually a book exchange. We were told to bring a book that meant something to us (or a copy of that book if we couldn’t part with ours) and wrap it to exchange at the meeting. The whole thing was a lot of fun, way better than a White Elephant exchange…and I got a new book!

The Rulez:

The rules were fairly simple but designed to make the whole process intriguing and fun. Here they are:

  1. Each book must be wrapped.
  2. On the package, a quote from the book needed to be written
  3. Draw numbers and each person gets to go to the table to pick a book…BUT
  4. You can steal a book from someone
  5. Once a book has been stolen three times, the last person gets to keep it.
  6. After everyone has had a turn and stolen books, you may open your present

There was one book that totally caught my eye. I ended up stealing it…

The quote or description from one book I wanted

…but,

Someone stole it again. So I stole another book, but then someone stole that one from me. I ended up stealing it back to find myself the new owner of “Micro” by Michael Crichton and Richard Preston. It is my first Michael Crichton book, so I am pretty excited about reading it!!!

Obviously, if you are not a fan of reading, this exchange would not be for you. No matter what, if you decide to do it, you would want to pick a genre or have some guidelines so that everyone ends up with a book they like.

All the books picked and unwrapped

Other ways to play

You could totally adapt this to other things too! You could host a beauty exchange with your gal pals, wrap some goodies in a box, and write some description that sounds intriguing. Following the same rules, you could pick and pass and steal…PLUS, everyone gets beauty products! Yay!

The key to whatever you do is to have fun with it! This is not only entertaining, but it is also light on the budget too!

Have you ever done one of these exchanges? If so, how did it go? What did you get? As always, I would love to hear from you in the comments below or my social media pages!

Fun way to host a gift exchange using books or something you love!

What a great ideal a fun way to get friends/family to try new authors. I am saving this in my back pocket and will get to use one of these days.

I think this is a great idea for an activity for a gathering. First it takes up part of the meeting time as an activity and second, everyone gets a book to take home. It adds an extra dimension to have the books wrapped. I’d like to do this exchange with unwrapped books because I read many different genres, but not every book genre.
