Do you ever find yourself trying to do all the things, only to feel like you are drowning? Sometimes, we need help in trying to figure out how to set realistic goals. While being a goal getter is great and all, overachieving often leads to burn out, so let’s talk today about fixing that!

True Confessions of an Overachiever

My latest example of overachieving started with the Blogtober challenge. For those of you not familiar, it is a blogging challenge where you post a new blog post every day for the month of October. I thought it would be a great idea as I am trying to catch up in my blog. I spent a good portion of the past year building my social media for two accounts, so I want to start building up the actual blogs now.

I lasted about a week. I should mention that in my eagerness, I also decided I should do the Blogtober challenge for both blogs. At the time, it seemed like a good goal. It would give me lots of content. However, I quickly realized that it wouldn’t give me quality content because I just don’t have it in me to write that much.

Changing My Intention

Realizing that this was just something I couldn’t do, I gave myself a new goal instead. I decided to shoot for writing as much quality content as I could this month. Now I don’t feel as stressed. Also, I ended up writing some great new content already. While I won’t have 31 brand new posts for this month, I will have several new posts. Plus, I started creating a more consistent schedule for writing.

How to Set Realistic Goals

When setting goals, it is important to be realistic. Otherwise, you will just sabotage yourself. Also, don’t focus on a lot of goals, just start with one or two things. Make sure they are specific though!

When setting realistic goals, set a time frame. Also, make sure they fit with any limitations you might have. For me, this is super important as I have chronic health issues and need to be mindful of not overdoing it.

Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you want something but feel stuck, make sure you reach out to friends and family to keep you on task. Also, if you feel really overwhelmed, maybe you should re-evaluate your goals.

    I totally agree with setting realistic expectations. I would love to do a blogtober or blogmas but with a full time job and other obligations I just don’t have the time! So I’ve just been trying to set a goal to post at least 3 times a week! Hopefully, I can keep that up!

    I always set goals. Before I go to sleep, I write down 5 things I want to get done the next day, and I try to do them. If I can’t get them all done, the remainders go on the list for the next day.
