While being pregnant during a pandemic is not ideal, I decided to turn my anxiety into photo art. With the pandemic casting a large shadow over what should be a special time in my life, I thought it would only be fitting to use it to create a post-apocalyptic and punk maternity photoshoot. Also, if you are looking for some punk maternity ideas, I got you covered. So read on!
Why I chose a Post-Apocalyptic Maternity Photoshoot
I found out I was pregnant right before we went into lockdown this spring because of Covid-19. Right before the chaos of the last several months, I had all these ideas on how I was going to show off plus size maternity looks. I wanted to normalize plus size pregnant people and show how chic and gorgeous one could look.
Unfortunately, that did not happen. In the beginning, I made all these plans for still dressing up, for working on my IG Fixer Upper Series I just started, and for just keep creating content even though I was stuck at home.
However, being pregnant during a pandemic brought out a lot of baggage I had been carrying from dealing with illness the past few years. It also brought forth some major PTSD triggers. For the most part, I have been doing the bare minimum the past several months, just trying to keep my head above water.
Making Covid my Bitch
I just started my third trimester and realized that I haven’t done much at all to embrace this pregnancy. This is my last one. Honestly, I did not think I was going to have another chance at this because of the hell I had been through with TBI and the other issues that I have fought in the past few years. So I did what came naturally to me, letting my frustrations out through artistic means.
My husband keeps a respirator on hand for work, and that is what originally gave me the idea. Then I saw that Westside Bowl, a local bowling alley and eatery recently had a graffiti artist decorate their exterior. While I didn’t have the perfect wardrobe for this particular concept, I did have enough to put something together.
Doing this was my way of fighting back against the mental demons I have been dealing with since this pandemic began. I decided if I have to be pregnant during the pandemic, I was making this pandemic my bitch while I was at it!
How to Find Punk Maternity Clothes
When I was pregnant with my last child, I discovered this cool little shop on the internet called MamaSan Maternity! The best part is that they carried some plus sizes as well. My skirt is one of the many pieces I purchased and hung on to just in case. As for the tee, Etsy is fabulous for finding unique pregnancy tees. Many shops carry plus size as well! My best advice is to ask questions and check reviews!
I totally stole the boots from my husband’s wardrobe. Most likely, I will give them back. However, I think I need to get a pair of my own. He found them on Amazon, and there is a wide selection of similar styles from which to choose!
The post-apocalyptic and punk maternity photoshoot was done all at once. We shot the punk part first, and then we added the goggles, jacket, and respirator for the other part. Naturally, we ended up choosing one of the hottest days of the summer to do this. Therefore, we shot quickly.
I would love to go back and possibly re-shoot the post-apocalyptic part. However, if we don’t, it is okay. This was a lot of fun and very therapeutic. I know this idea isn’t for everyone, but my goal right now is to try to do things that help me deal with what is going on.
