How to Find Plus Size Fan Girl Fashion

Five years ago, I made a very conscious decision to purge my wardrobe and start fresh. Granted, I wore trendy clothes, but to be honest, they just did not fit who I am. It was like I settled for mom gear and forgot my own sense of style. Needless to say, I had no idea where to start.
Where to find Plus Size Fan Girl Fashion
While I started wearing more pin up and rockabilly style apparel, I also liked showing off my geek side. While Hot Topic does not carry a lot of plus size in their stores (and I want to say for the record that I think they should), they carry a pretty extensive line on their website. I get some of my cosplay starter dresses there when they have clearance sales because sometimes it makes it cheaper to go that route than to make it myself, but you can read more about that on another post. They carry a lot of tee shirts for various fandoms, as well as dresses and accessories. The R2D2 purse featured here was purchased there.
I also find a lot of fun pieces at Torrid. As you probably know, if you follow me on Instagram, I wear a lot of clothes from Torrid. In store, they carry a lot of tee shirts, sweaters, pants, and all that jazz. They also have been known to carry underwear and bralettes too in certain fandoms, like Star Wars. Plus, you can get some super cute purses as well. I have even gotten Disney themed flats there. However, if you go online, they have wayyyyy more! That is how I got the Star Wars romper. I love this romper by the way. It is super cute, and it fits pretty true to size. The nice thing about Torrid is that they carry clothing from size 10 to 30.
Probably one of the most extensive places to find fan girl clothes though is at Her Universe. Her Universe is an online store that caters to fandoms. The only drawback is that it only goes to a 3x, and it is a bit small. They carry everything from sleepwear to pin up style dresses in your favorite fandoms. Super cute stuff!
These are my favorite places to shop for my geekier clothes. I love showing off my love of Star Wars, Doctor Who, comic books, and Disney characters. The fact that I look super cute while doing it is a plus.
For this particular look featured in this post, I wore a Star Wars romper from Torrid with a R2-D2 purse from Hot Topic. My hat and sandals are thrifted from Clothes Mentor. I wore this for a day out with the mister, but where would you wear an outfit like this?

Torrid Spring Haul and Shopping Tips

Torrid has become somewhat of an addiction over the last eleven years. I remember my first Torrid visit like it was yesterday…I was on vacation in Cleveland (because Cleveland rocks, which is why I am now living close to the CLE now). I walked in and found my home! It was a trendy plus size gal’s dream come true! Granted, I went back to my home near Philly and lamented for several years that the closest one to me there was two hours away, until we finally got one at King of Prussia Mall. Now I am lucky to have two Torrids within 15 minutes of driving distance! It’s a dream come true!
However, I know a lot of my friends get sticker shock when they see some of the pretty dresses and outfits there, so I am going to give you some of my best tips for getting what you want without breaking the bank!

Check their Clearance

One of the things I like about Torrid is their consistent fit. I have a generally good idea what size I will be in their clothes, which means that I can shop online and generally not have to return things. I check their sales a lot, both online and in-store. Sometimes the individual stores themselves have different sales than what is online. This holds true especially for their buy one get two free clearance. Seriously, that is one of their best deals, and I get so many great pieces that way!

Become an Insider

If you want to stay in the know, make sure that you are on their email list and an Insider. Insiders earn points that turn into rewards bucks for your purchases. Their rewards are the only thing that really stack too with Haute Cash and coupons. I pay attention to my emails for when they have flash sales. Their flash sales are the bomb! I usually have a running wishlist of things I want, and then I use these as opportunities to get what I want and also build Haute Cash. Haute Cash can be redeemed a few times a year. You earn $25 for every $50 spent. Then during redemption, you use them on your purchase. The only drawback is that you cannot use Haute Cash on clearance! However, you can score some amazing deals on regular priced merchandise, which is how I got this outfit!

The Outfit

This time around for Torrid Haute Cash, I did not have a lot built up. However, I had a small wish list anyways, so I was not too terribly disappointed. I used the Haute Cash that I had and got this entire outfit! I wanted something that has a bit of the retro feel that I love to wear but was also comfortable for the beginning of summer. I got this cute polka dot challis cami because I love the flowy babydoll look and the retro feel of the polka dots. Then I paired it with their cropped leggings in red. To accessorize, I topped it off with the fisherman’s hat. Then I added their black and white striped Mary Janes to finish the look. Each piece goes together for the whole look, but I can also pair them with other things in my closet for fun as well!

So what do you think? Is it cute, or would you have paired it differently? I hope you found this helpful for the next time you shop at Torrid, and if it was, make sure to share!

Why you should not be ashamed to love yourself

pink sofa edit
When this photo showed up in my feed a few days ago, it made me smile…not because of my expression, but because of seeing how far I have come since then.
I like to think of myself as a body positive activist. However, even I have times where I doubt myself and pick myself apart. It feels like society is set up for self-hate. With summer upon us, my Facebook feed has been flooded by self-hate memes for not having a “beach ready” body and having arms that are too fat to be seen in public. There are so many women that are going to spend this summer either miserable and sweating because they are wearing layers because they are afraid someone is going to make fun of their bodies. There are women that will not go to the pool because they have been programmed by society to feel that they need to be able to present the “perfect body” in order to enjoy some sun and splash time.

Sadly, two years ago, I could not see how awesome I looked in this picture!

Why do we do this to ourselves? No matter what size we are, we are not going to be everyone’s cup of tea! Even if I wake up tomorrow magically skinny, there will be something else about me that I am supposed to hate, according to haters on the internet. I don’t feel that I owe it to the internet to not enjoy the summer because of ridiculous standards. I spent years not wearing tank tops or cute dresses. I refrained from wearing a swimsuit in public because I was afraid of what some ignoramus might say. Do I know that I am fat? Yes, yes I do. Does it make me worth less as a person? No. No it does not.
I know I have said it before, and I am going to say it again. Whether or not, we get down to the perfect size, it is okay to love ourselves as we are right now. It is okay to be you. It is okay to enjoy life, and honestly, it will make you feel better about yourself. The more we bash ourselves and put ourselves down, the more we are just feeding into other people’s expectations. If you want to lose weight, that is fine. I am not saying you should not. I am saying that you should not think less of yourself because your weight, your butt, your boobs, your arms, your tummy, or (insert anything here) does not fit the mold.
This summer, I challenge you to be bold. I challenge you to hold your head high. I challenge you to hold yourself to different standards than what we are being brainwashed to believe. Wear what you want. Do what you want. Be what you want, but above all…LOVE YOURSELF WHILE DOING IT!

Ditch the dark color rule

When you are plus-size, you may hear how you should wear dark colors. “They are slimming,” people say. Well…I say, “Screw that!”
Put some light and fun color into your life!
It is that time of year, where we are just on the cusp of summer, meaning that I start out in a cardi, and I want a tank top by the end of the day. I found these cute boot cut jeans at Torrid on clearance a while back. I always wear darker colors for jeans, but at $15, I could not pass these up! I am glad I did not because these jeans are seriously cute, and I like how they look on me.
Speaking of things I do not usually try, I found the BMO cardigan on clearance at Hot Topic. I almost did not get it, but it is super cute, and I love having something lightweight like this for the beginning of summer. Also, who doesn’t like Adventure Time?
The babydoll tank came from Rue 21. You may have heard they are restructuring. I am so glad that none of my local stores are closing. They have seriously cute clothes! Also, the quality has vastly improved since my teenage years. They have a great selection of plus-size clothing now, up to a size 24 and could seriously be a contender in the plus size market. Also, they have Rue bucks going on now, and well you can use them on pretty much anything during redemption. Let’s just say that I love this store!
I even have a bag to match the ensemble, thanks to Thirty-One Gifts. The “All About the Benjamins” wallet is like the TARDIS of wallets! I own an LG V20 because I tend to use it as a tablet more than a phone. I read on this thing! It is freaking huge! It also fits in this wallet, along with my cards and even my checkbook (and currently crayons. Don’t ask!) It is pretty awesome.
While the tank is a bit of a darker blue, it is a bit out of my usual style because it has white on it, and I am a bit of a mess at times. I love the lighter jeans and the cardigan. It inspired me to get a few more lighter colors for summer. I am even shooting with a lighter colored dress in a few weeks!
My point of all of this today is this: don’t get stuck in a rut of staying within the norms, especially if you are plus size! There are so many fun colors out there, and you will look fabulous!
What is something you have done that is out of the norm with fashion recently? I would love to hear about it! Don’t forget to share and follow my blog for more plus size fashion, beauty, and pin-up adventures!

Fun, Flirty, and Frugal

While out and about last weekend, I saw Torrid had BOGO on clearance. Of course, I had to take a peek! I love it more when it is “Buy 2, Get 1 Free,” but there were still some great deals! I found this awesome top that I would not have normally grabbed. However, I tried on another similar and am in love. It is a bit flowy and covers tummy problems. While I am pretty body confident most days, there are some days where I just feel kinda meh. This is perfect for regular days and those days! I really like the length on this too. It looks great with my capri leggings, also Torrid but last summer. This would also look good with cropped jeans as well.
I finished the look off with a chunky necklace. Then I added my favorite flower. I have a ton of flowers, but I seriously only wear like two of them. I like what I like.
They do have more of this style still on clearance, and I think I saw some updated ones for spring. They are super cute, but I love it better when I can get it on the cheap!
What do you think? Would you wear it like this, or would you pair it differently? Have you scored a great deal lately? If so, what was it?

Plus Size Barbie Girl

As much as I was very much into Star Wars, He-Man, Thundercats, and other awesome action figures, I also had a big obsession with Barbie. Granted, my Barbies were also some kick-ass warriors for most of my stories, but they did it with style! Needless to say, it is another reason for me to keep checking out my local Torrid…or should I say Torrids because we just got another one here. Seriously, it about made me cry tears of joy because where I live there are two Torrids, two Lane Bryants, and two Rue 21s (in which the one is the largest store they own and about as much space is devoted there to their plus size as all the other sizes). We also haveĀ  Charlotte Russe and Forever 21, but I am not loving F21 so much right now because they basically halved the plus size, and when I go there, it is like they just get in a few pieces, and most of them are just not happening. I also am lucky enough to have some cool plus size consignment stores here too. Honestly, it is a wonder I am not completely broke. It takes a lot of will power…a LOT of will power, but I digress.
So, Torrid has Barbie. Currently I am really trying to tell myself that I do not need this Barbie swimsuit, but really I think I do. It is seriously cute!

So far, I have all the sweaters, as well as some dresses and tees. I am kinda sad that I will not be wearing this sweater much anymore as it is supposed to be like 75 this weekend!

I love clothes like this because not only are they a throwback to childhood, but they are just fun pieces. I know some people might find it cheesy, but for me, it is fun to wear.

Hot Day at the Car Show

I have this uncanny ability to only be able to attend car shows when it is blazing hot! This particular day, we actually had to shorten the shoot because the camera was getting too hot. However, despite the heat, we got some amazing shots that day! This is one of my favorites taken by Victor Devilbliss. MUAH was by Making Faces Professional Makeup.

dress and shoes by Torrid.

Just a word of advice to any of my followers who may be doing a pin up shoot outdoors in the summer: hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! For the event, I was dressed in shapers, a pettiskirt, and a thick dress. I wanted to melt! However, drinking lots of water helped me have lots of fun that day, so remember to drink lots of water. Also, keep oil blotters handy if you have them and some extra powder foundation for touch ups. Keep your hair simple. The humidity can wreak havoc on your look, and you will end up looking like a wilted flower. Also, do NOT touch someone else’s vehicle without asking. Be mindful that someone worked hard to keep that vehicle in that condition or get it looking nice again!
I cannot wait to go to car shows this summer! It is one of my favorite things to do! I hope you found my tips helpful and feel free to add yours in the comments below!

Sometimes, you just gotta put on a dress

Yesterday, of course, was the first day of Spring. Anyone who knows me knows I loathe Winter. I hate being cold. I love wearing my fun coats and sweaters and such. However, I long to wear my pretty dresses without feeling a draft on my legs.
I decided that the first day of spring meant it was time to break out the fun dresses again. I went with my favorite red polka dot dress. The dress came from a small company that went out of business not too long ago. Also, the company featured me as their Facebook cover girl for a bit. This was after I first started getting involved in the pin up community, so I was super excited.
To be honest, I have been in a bit of a funk lately. Those of you who have followed me for a while know that I try to keep a schedule for posting but sometimes have time lapses. The past few weeks have been fairly regular. However, it comes at a bit of a cost to me as in it tires me out to work for long periods of time. I write here and another place. Plus, I sell leggings and accessories. Then there is the whole matter that I am taking the burlesque course. It is all fun. To be honest, it does not seem like a lot. However, my brain does not always want to cooperate with me. It has been over a year and a half since my brain injury relapse, and I still struggle at times.
That being said, I am not giving up on any of it. I have this determination to get my brain back into shape. I also recently found a new doctor and am slightly optimistic that I might get some answers. In the meantime, I will keep plugging along.
The big thing about wearing one of my favorite dresses yesterday was that it put me in a better mood. Granted, all the compliments that I got while I was out and about rocking my style totally went to my head and puffed up my ego more. (Not really. I seriously don’t have THAT big of an ego. Okay, I think I am hot. However, we all should think that way, dontcha think?) Wearing the dress got me out of my slump too. I woke up in a better mood today and actually got more accomplished. Sometimes, dressing up can be a form of therapy. We need to take good care of ourselves, and what better way than getting dressed up just because we want to do it. So if you find yourself in a funk that seems to not want to go away, maybe it is time to put on a dress, a cute pair of shoes, and get your strut on!

Sweater Weather Fun

I have focused a lot on wearing tunics, dresses, and accessories this winter. However, my favorite part of winter is my ever-expanding sweater collection. I love fun sweaters. Torrid has been my go-to place for sweaters the last several years, and so I thought I would show you some of my favorites today!

Union Jack Sweater by Torrid

This Union Jack Sweater is from last year but still a favorite. I have one similar to it that has a skull instead of a heart. It is super comfy and super warm!
Barbie Sweater by Torrid

OMG! I am in love with Torrid’s Barbie collection. Have you seen the swimsuits yet? I cannot wait until summer to try one out! I got one of the sweaters and a sweatshirt from this collection for this winter. I will say that these sweaters and sweatshirts tend to run a bit small. If you decide to try them out, which for the most part I have only seen these online, I would size up for comfort.
Jack Skellington Sweater by Torrid. Leggings also by Torrid.

This sweater is my absolute favorite as Nightmare before Christmas is an obsession of mine. However, the material scared me a bit because I was really afraid of it snagging. The key to wearing is to wash on a gentle cycle and lay flat to dry. This sweater also is one that it pays to size up a bit. I actually wore this the other day without a coat while playing in the snow. It is really that warm!
These are just a few of my favorites. They are great with everything…a skirt, leggings, jeans. Dress them up. Dress them down. You cannot go wrong with a fun sweater. Add a scarf, and you are off on a snow bunny adventure.
How do you wear your sweaters? Please feel free to tell me your thoughts in the comments below!
