This year for National Mental Health Awareness Month I want to show you some ways you can work to spread awareness within your community. Even during social distancing, you can work to spread awareness. That way you help your community learn more about mental health.

Mental health illnesses impact many people all over the world Some are suffering right now as you read this article. If you haven’t experienced a loved one sinking into depression, living with anxiety, or coping with some other mental health illness then consider yourself outside of the norm.

Whether you’re family with mental health illnesses or not, you can still work to spread mental health awareness in your community using my tips below.

Ways to Spread Mental Health Awareness in Your Community

Talk About Your Experience

If you’ve ever experienced mental health issues or have been diagnosed with a mental health illness, now is the time to talk about your experience. There are many options for this. These include starting a blog, sharing updates on social media, or recording a series of videos where you describe your experiences with mental illness to share with the world.

During National Mental Health Awareness Month, here are some tips to help spread mental health awareness within your community. Find out how you can help!

Be Open to Listen

The stigma associated with mental health illness has kept a lot of people quiet. It’s time to be the person who tells the community that you’re a safe person to open up to. Keep your social media private message inboxes open for anyone who wants to talk. Also, allow your friends to know that you’re available anytime they need to vent or chat about their mental health.

Encourage Kind Language

Those who don’t know much about mental health sometimes use words that tend to trigger or discourage someone who’s suffering from speaking up. Try to help your friends, family, and social media connections to understand what type of language is triggering. Then they will know what type of language helps those suffering from mental health illness.

During National Mental Health Awareness Month, here are some tips to help spread mental health awareness within your community. Find out how you can help!

Volunteer  Your Time

Research various mental health programs that need volunteers. Try to become a volunteer with a local organization that offers mental health screenings.  Or try to find other programs that help someone overcome their challenges with mental illness. You can bring a friend along so that you’re doing your part to spread awareness one person at a time during your volunteer sessions.

Final Thoughts

When it comes to spreading mental health awareness in your community, the key is to always be a safe person to talk to. Be open to sharing your personal experiences. Also work to educate your community about the importance of mental health screenings. The use of kind language when discussing mental health with their loved ones also helps.

All of these tips will help keep your community educated about ways to handle mental health illness for National Mental Health Awareness Month. They also encourage a sense of togetherness within the community.

Spreading awareness is so important and most people can be helped. It’s a shame that there is still such a stigma associated with it.
